The Jewish Community Center of the Lehigh Valley has officially been designated as a Blue Zones Project-approved organization. This designation recognizes the JCC’s role in making the Lehigh Valley community a healthier place to live, work, learn and play. The Blue Zones project is an international endeavor focused on community and individual well-being to help people live better, longer using learnings from communities around the world at which people reach age 100 at abnormally high rates.
Locally, the Blue Zones Project, sponsored by the City of Allentown and the Lehigh Valley Health Network, focuses on our built environment, municipal policies, and local support organizations to improve health outcomes, increase civic pride and support healthy economic development. The Blue Zones “Power 9” components, which mimic the findings from studying community around the world, include regular social gatherings, staying active because of your environment, focusing on family connectivity, and participating in faith-based services.
The Blue Zones values align strongly with the JCC’s existing mission, values, and existing programming, making the program a good fit. As a community institution, participating in community-wide health and wellness initiatives is likewise a natural extension of the JCC’s work. Other Blue Zones Project-approved organizations in the Jewish community include the Jewish Day School of the Lehigh Valley, and Jay’s Local. Together, our local organizations are helping to build a stronger, healthier Lehigh Valley.
