Camp JCC: Important Changes to Summer 2020 Program

Dear Camp JCC Families,

We are writing to share information about changes to our summer camp program as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

When Lehigh County moves into the "yellow" phase (as described in the governor's phased reopening plan), we do intend to operate a program this summer. Our ability to do this is based on the following factors:

  • State orders declaring that it is legal to operate child care programs
  • Our ability to properly staff the program, and provide necessary protection for your children and our employees
  • Our ability to implement new policies and procedures, based on expert guidance, including our ability to procure the necessary supplies and equipment

We anticipate receiving additional guidance from both the state and the American Camp Association in the near future. Based on the limited information that is currently available, we are now planning the changes listed below. It is possible that there will be more changes as the situation evolves, both prior to and during the summer.

Specialty Camps and Cohort Groups

To limit the mixing of children between groups, we will be canceling all specialty camps for Weeks 1-8 (June 15-August 7). We will evaluate the specialty camps after that point over the course of the summer as the situation evolves. Those currently registered for a specialty camp in Weeks 1-8 will have their registration changed to our traditional camp program for those weeks; any difference in fees will be refunded to you. If you prefer to cancel your registration entirely, please let us know and we will issue a full refund.

As per usual, children in our traditional camp program will be split up based on age. We anticipate group sizes of no more than 10 children, so there may be multiple groups per age cohort and same-age children may be split into separate groups. We will do our best to accommodate grouping requests but cannot make any promises.

At this time, due to anticipated limited capacity in our program, we will only take registrations for children in Pre-K through 6th grade; we will not offer a program for children in grades 7-8. Additionally, we will not operate our Leaders in Training program this summer. As a reminder, children currently in the Preschool and Pre-K classes in our ECE program must register for camp on a weekly basis.

Changes to the Camp Program

Camp will take place almost entirely within individual age-based camper groups, which will be mostly limited to each group's "home base" in the building and going outside for approved recreational activities. Our goal is for the children to spend as much time outside as possible, but safety will come first. We will have several outside spaces, but only one group will use any of those spaces at a time. There will be no mixing or interaction between groups, no all-camp activities or gatherings, and no field trips. Visitors will not be permitted. We continue to await guidance on whether or not swimming will be permitted.

Camp Hours and Activities

All campers will be registered for full-day hours of 8am - 5:30pm. There will be no additional extended care options available, but these times represent an additional 2.5 hours of care beyond our typical 9am - 4pm camp day. Anyone currently registered for extended care will have those fees refunded. These hours allow us to ensure the same staff stay with the same kids at all times, with no mixing of staff or campers between groups.

Below is a sample activity schedule. This schedule is for demonstrative purposes only and is subject to change. We anticipate that different age groups will participate in different age-appropriate activities as we work to identify new activities that fit into our new format.

8:00 Arrival and games
9:15 Virtual flagpole
9:30 Recreation Park (scooters, hockey, gaga)
10:15 Arts and crafts
11:00 Athletic field (no-contact games)
11:45 Lunch and free play
12:15 Science
1:00 Swimming
1:45 Music and dance
2:30 Snack and playground
3:15 Virtual flagpole
3:30 Dismissal and games (until 5pm)

Summary

  • If you are currently registered for our traditional camp program (Camp Adventure), you are still registered.
  • If you are currently registered for any specialty camps during Weeks 1-8, they have been converted to traditional camp registrations.
  • Camp hours are now 8am-5:30pm; these hours are included in the base fee of camp. There are no additional extended care hours available.
  • Campers will spend most of their time in small groups. There will be no field trips or all-camp activities. Our fantastic staff will plan fun activities for each group in their assigned indoor space, or in outdoor recreational spaces.
  • Cancellation requests must be received by May 31 to receive a full refund.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we move forward in uncertain times. The details contained in this message contain our thinking at this time based on the information available to us. Our goal is to provide a child care option that is both safe and fun, with health and safety being our primary concern. While we await guidance from our partners and public health officials, we remain hopeful that we will have a wonderful, albeit different, camp experience this summer!
