The long-running Broadway musical, “Mamma Mia!,” which ended its New York run earlier this season, has announced that it is embarking on a “final farewell tour” beginning this month. It will hit 30 cities across North America, one of them being Philadelphia.
Casting has also been announced for this run, and we are proud to say that one of our own members, Lizzie Markson (daughter of JCC members Bill and Jane Markson) has been cast as the lead role, Sophie.
The play has put on approximately 5,773 performances for millions of fans around the world in a record-breaking 14 year Broadway run. This run will mark its 15th and final year.
Featuring the music of ABBA, “Mamma Mia!” is the eighth-longest-running show in Broadway history. With music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, the production features a book by Catherine Johnson, direction by Phyllida Lloyd.
On a small Greek island, Sophie dreams of a perfect wedding — one which includes her father giving her away. The problem? Sophie doesn’t know who he is! Her mother Donna, the former lead singer of the 1970s pop group Donna and the Dynamos, refuses to talk about the past, so Sophie decides to take matters into her own hands. Sneaking a peek in her mother’s old diaries, she discovers three possible fathers: Sam, Bill, and Harry. She secretly invites all three to the wedding, convinced that she’ll know her father when she sees him. But when all three turn up, it may not be as clear as she thought.
The story also inspired a movie in 2008 that featured Meryl Streep as Donna and Amanda Seyfried as Sophie. This became the fifth highest-grossing film in 2008 and became the highest grossing musical of all time in terms of worldwide take.
